TV PRODUCTION

VOCABULARY REVIEW 

1. Camcorder - An item of video equipment that uses a video camera permanently attached to a video deck or VCR to create and record a video signal. 

2. Charge-coupled device (CCD) - An imaging device used in most video cameras and camcorders.  It converts reflected light into electrical signals then recorded onto video tape. 

3. Focus - Adjustment made to the focal length of the lens to create a sharper, more defined picture. 

4. Tripod - A three legged mounting device for a video camera or camcorder that provides stability. 

5. Viewfinder and viewscreen - A small video monitor mounted on a video camera or camcorder that provides a view of the video image to the videographer.  Viewfinders may be presented as eyepieces, as small screens mounted on the side of the camcorder or as a larger video monitors mounted near the top of a studio camera. 

6. Raw footage – Pre-edited footage directly from the camcorder.  (not edited) 

7. Videographer’s Repertoire consists of six shots:Long shot, bust shot/head & shoulders shot, extreme close-up, medium shot, close-up, over-the-shoulder 

8. Rule of Thirds – Divides the screen into an imaginary grid.  The points formed by the intersections of the imaginary lines is where the human eye directs its attention.  To create video with good composition, place the most important part of the picture at one of the intersections.   

9. Cut – Instantaneous change from one shot to another. 

10. Tripod – Three legged mounting device for a video camera or camcorder that provides stability.   

11. Jump cut – An unnatural, abrupt switch between shots identical in subject but slightly different location, so the subject appears to jump from one screen location to another.   

12. Lens – The curved glass on a video camera or camcorder that collects light.   

13. Headroom – The amount of space above a talent’s head.   

14. To create depth in your shots, be sure you have something in the foreground, middle-ground and background.   

15.  Microphone Directionality:  Omnidirectional microphones collect sound from all around – a 360 degree area. 

                                          Unidirectional microphones pick up sound from the top of the microphone/one direction, very little from

                                                    the sides, and almost none from the back.  The pickup pattern of this microphone looks like
                                                      an  upside down heart. 

16. Types of Microphones:Handheld, Lavaliere, Surface Mount Microphone, Pressure Zone Microphone, Shotgun Microphone, Wireless Microphone System 

17.      Lavaliere microphones are:

a.  small, less noticeable

b.    talent is free to use hands

c.  requires no skill from the user  

18. A shotgun microphone is very unidirectional.  It collects sound from a very narrow area in front of the microphone and none from the sides or back.  

19. A hand-held microphone should be held four to six inches from the sound source. 

20. A wireless microphone replaces cords and cables with a radio transmitter and receiver. 

21. A windscreen is a piece of foam that fits over a microphone to cut down on wind noise and can also be used when a talent has an expressive voice that over emphasizes the letters b, d, p, and t.   

22.  Nat Sound – Natural sound a microphone picks up in the room or the background noise.   

23. B-roll – Video shots that enhance or tell the story. 

24. Supers – Text messages that flash across the screen to support key voice-over points/ or may identify the location of where video was shot or name of the person being interviewed.   

25. VO – The reporters voice narrating the story or talent voice narrating a commercial or psa. 

26. Soundbite- An interview or sound from a source other than the narration or voice over. 

27.  Public Service Announcementcan raise awareness about your issue.

28.  Hook - A hook is whatever you use to grab the listener or viewer's  attention. 

29. Package – a pre-recorded piece that includes narration or voice over, interviews and natural sound.   

30. Microphone Tips – Handle carefully, test by speaking not tapping, use a windscreen outdoors, mic source not area  

31. Audio Mixer – electronic component that facilitates the selection and combination of audio signals.     

32. Logo – A mark or symbol that represents a company or product.   

33. Target Audience – The main group of people that the commercial is trying to reach and convince to buy the product or service.  

34. Slogan – a short memorable phrase used to promote a product.   

35. Celebrity Endorsement – When a famous person talks about the good qualities of a product to promote it.   

36. Volume Unit Meter or VU Meter:   An electronic device that displays the strength of an audio signal. There are two types of VU Meters – Analog and LED 

37. brainstorm- Creatively discussing, identifying and listing possible ideas and topics for a project with your colleagues.   

38. Commercial – A paid advertisement on radio or television promoting a product or service.   

39. Audio Dub – Erasing an old audio track and replacing it with a new one.
